Last week, my friend and fellow graphic designer Lisa Ly and I went to an AIGA presentation from illustrator and letterer Jessica Hische. First of all, she’s a total badass design nerd. Second of all, she had a lot of inspiring points on focusing your breadth of skills into a single niche.

“Find your chocolate,” she said as she presented a slide of a candy bar label. “The illustrator who drew this chocolate—only draws chocolate. That’s it. Just chocolate.”

This got me thinking more and more. I’ve always said that my dream job would be designing for theatres, artists and nonprofits… so what’s stopping me? My strengths lie in those fields and those are the jobs I am most passionate about. Last week, I solidified two contract jobs exactly in this scope of work. A sign?

It’s time for a rebrand—not a visual rebrand, because even though I created my logo six years ago, I am still very attached to my “m”. But rather a mental rebrand, if you will. So with this post, I stand my ground and brand myself Matthew Meier, Theatrical Graphic and Publication Designer. Need a website? Call Jeff. Need letterpress? Call Lisa. Need a copywriter? Call Ali. I’m focusing my energy on anything within the creative and nonprofit industry and that can use a good, dedicated Theatrical Graphic and Publication Designer. (Except for you Aunt Annie. I’ll still do your website.)

Find your chocolate. I think I just found mine.

* mM
